Mui Wo to Pui O Hike HONG KONG
Happy New Year! Hope everyone had the opportunity to take some time off during the holidays to relax - because as we all know and have experienced, this year has definitely been a challenging one!
I want to share an amazing experience I had during my week off during the holidays as my first post of the year. I hope it will provide you much joy and relaxation as it did to me!
How to Get to and back Mui Wo - Hong Kong Island
Ferries from Central Pier No.6 departs every 40 minutes Mondays through Saturdays and less frequently on Sundays and Public holidays. Click here for the official First Ferry Schedule and plan accordingly!
Where to Eat
There are a wide selection of restaurants near the ferry landing at Mui Wo to choose from to grab a bite before or after your hike! We opted for the China Bear, a lovely pub establishment for brunch to boost up our energy before the hike. Outdoor seating, great food, and wonderful views to relax, what more can you ask for?!
We each got the fish and chips with a freshly squeezed carrot, apple, ginger juice before embarking on our 9 km hike to Pui O Beach!
There are plenty of other options as well. We were originally planning to go to Bahce Turkish but they were too busy and had no tables! Definitely have to go back to check it out.
Hiking Route from Mui Wo to Pui O Beach
Total distance: 9 km
Difficulty: 4/10
Duration: 2.5 hours
Overall the hike was really manageable and easy to navigate. There are well indicated signs, both standardized ones or spray painted ones on random sidewalks and walls, either way you can’t miss it! The only challenging parts are the 2 areas of uphill steps marked up by large stones towards the last 1/3 of the hike. Afterwards, it’s all downhill - but not as easy as you think (of course not crazy difficult) but my thighs were definitely shaking a bit because they were already fatigued from climbing uphill earlier. Besides this, the remainder of the hike is relatively flat and very easy to walk.
The views from this hike are also incredible! The first 1/3 of the hike are along the water with the Hong Kong skyline as the backdrop. The 2/3 of the hike is through wonderful nature and lush greens. The last 1/3 of the hike with the ending of Pui O Beach is incredible. We started our hike after brunch at China Bear so we got to Pui O just in time for sunset. A sleepy village near the water, the village not only has the beach but also a wetland area with village houses, and best yet, water buffalos!
Pui O Village and Beach
The beach is not incredibly big but definitely not as crowded as some of the main beaches on Hong Kong Island. The water looked rather clean as well - but of course I didn’t take the liberty to go in in “cold” December weather.
Highly urge everyone to walk around this beautiful village. On our way to search of cabs to take us back to Mui Wo, we walked through a beautiful windy road through the wetlands and ponds. A water buffalo was resting or shall I say, taking a bath(?) in one of the muddy ponds. It was eating and chilling - so relaxed to the point that when I went up to it to take a photo of him in his leisure state, he let out a loud slow fart! Definitely a highlight from the hike! No sarcasm.
Pui O to Mui Wo
Both a taxi stand and main bus station exist in the center of Pui O Village. We originally planned to take a blue cabbie back to Mui Wo, but unfortunately there weren’t any. Luckily we caught the 3M bus, which looks like a long distance coach bus that stops at Mui Wo Ferry Pier for only $2 HKD!
This was one of my favorite day trips in Hong Kong thus far and I really recommend anyone looking for something relaxing but also get a bit of a work out in to do this route! Hope everyone have a wonderful year and I will try my best to update more regularly on this site :)
